Casian Crawfish opened last year (2017), but because I’m not a huge crawfish nut I’m just now getting around to visiting. The restaurant is located at 5314 Telephone Rd, which makes it bit more accessible than other crawfish spots I’ve read about in Chinatown.
My husband loves crawfish and for his birthday I wanted to take him somewhere that also offered “Viet-Cajun” mud bugs in addition to the boiled, Louisiana/Cajun style. After watching “Ugly Delicious” on Netflix I wanted to get his opinion on this whole Viet-Cajun crawfish craze.
After receiving tons of reviews for locations in (or around) Chinatown like Crawfish & Noodles, Cajun Kitchen and Crawfish Cafe, we decided on Casian Crawfish. When it comes to crawfish, one thing people want to know off top is price per pound. I can tell you that most places start at $7-$8 bucks per pound. Though you may find a steal like Prospect Park’s 5 lbs for $15 (which I hear is hit or miss).
CASIAN CRAWFISH PRICES
Crawfish – $7.99 lb
Crab Legs – $13.99 Per Cluster
10pc Jumbo Shrimp – $12.99
Casian Crawfish is nothing fancy, which IMO is best! It’s located in a little shopping center and if it weren’t for the huge Casian Crawfish sign we would have missed it. I am almost certain all the cars in the tiny lot were patrons of the restaurant. The walls of the space are lined with picnic styled tables, covered in blue and white checkered gingham. Making clean up a breeze!
The service is counter style. You walk up, order, pay and they provide you with a plastic table cover and bowls for your shells. Attentive runners deliver plastic bags of steaming crawfish, crab, shrimp, corn and potatoes to your table. Of which I had no clue what to do with. Do you dump everything on the table? Eat it out the bag? WTF! Eventually my anxiety just took over and I dumped everything out. Making a big ol’ mess. #StoryofMyLife
The menu offers great variety of fried foods, rice, wings and other viet foods. We stuck to the boiled stuff. My hubby ordered 3lbs of crawfish, and I ordered 2lbs of crab legs and 10 Jumbo Shrimp. The crab legs were amazing. The shrimp was truly jumbo and succulent. My only qualm was that still contained intestinal tract. I picked it out after removing the shell.
They offer your Choice of Casian Style (Wet – Garlic Butter Sauce), Casian Sprinkles (Dry – Louisiana Powder style), Lime Sprinkles (Casian Sprinkles with Fresh Squeezed Limes) or All In (Combination os Casian Style and Lime Sprinkles $1.00 more per pound). I suggest Casian’s “all In” sauce. The lime sprinkles really sends the shellfish flavor into orbit!
They also offer all boiled seafood in varying spice levels, and even have a Hot all Hell “Reaper Crawfish Challenge” that I personally wouldn’t touch with a 10ft pole. My husband ordered 1lb of spicy crawfish. I ate one and was done!
