Wine tasting is one of my favorite things to do, especially with friends! There are tons of places in Houston that offer wine tastings so selecting where to visit can be daunting at times. I am subscribed to tons of Houston restaurant newsletters that help me keep up with its ever evolving culinary culture and happened to get a nice little note from Plonk! Beer and Wine Bistro regarding their Holiday Wine Tasting. Plonk staff selected the “perfect pairings” for your Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Below is a little recap of the wines and the bistro!
Guests were given a $10 pluck coin to be used during the tasting or towards a bottle purchase. For an additional $10 you could purchase an additional tasting in the “more expensive” wine room. Luckily for me, my girlfriend bought 2 extra tokens and got to taste both sets for FREE..
Plonk!’s wine tasting consisted of 6 wines perfect to go with your holiday meals and desserts. The funny thing was when I asked each of the male wine attendants about the wine and what items they suggested, they both said the wines go great with “Really anything man!” I was like WTF.. LOL..I could have told me that.
Weingut Knoll, Gruner Veltliner (2013) – $62
Arrowhead, Cabernet Sauvignon (2010) – $45
** Prices listed are based on in-house retail purchase.* You can get them a little cheaper online. I like the site Wine Finder.. quick and easy!
Only a couple of these wines peaked my interest. I enjoyed the reds: Pinot, Petite Sirah and the Cab, but the whites were a little too dry. I will say that the Moscato Azul from Heidi Barett (first female winemaker), was great. Not too sweet, smooth with a nice chill. I would totally purchase that for a summer pairing.
The Pinot happened to be my favorite! I am happy to share that should you be “turkied” out.. it paired perfectly with this pizza and the prosciutto. They have a vast menu with items like steamed mussels and other cheese assortments like melted brie and fruit! See their Facebook page for full menu.
I enjoyed Ponk! and look forward to going back! met the owner, Scott during my visit. He was a super chill guy who enjoys getting to know his customers in the company of great beers and hearty wines.. This is a bistro, so it’s quaint and intimate, not a ton of seating but enough for you and a couple friends to sit either inside or outside on the patio. Most of the tables are 4 tops but can be pushed together for more seats.
I would make a reservation if you have a large party so the staff can prepare for you.
Make sure to sign up for the Plonk! E-newsletter. It will keep you informed of their latest events and tastings!
