Poke All Day – Hawaiian Poke Co.

Have you ever tried Poke? What about Sashimi? Poke is a raw fish salad served as an appetizer in Hawaiian cuisine, and sometimes as an entree. Poke is the Hawaiian verb for “section” or “to slice or cut.” I enjoyed poke for the first time during a recent visit to Hawaiian Poke Co.

Owner, Mark V. serves Hawaiian Fusion food that is set to tantalize your taste buds. The Poke here is rough cut, fresh sashimi grade ahi. It’s mixed with shoyu sauce, sesame oil, sesame seeds, onions and ogo. As a person who loves delicious food, served fresh and made to order, I genuinely dig this place, and will most certainly return.

SMALL PLATE STARTERS

The menu at Hawaiian Poke Co. offers a multitude of raw fish based options. Additionally, a portion of the menu is dictated to those items that don’t contain raw fish (or fish). So, should someone in your crew not be into the whole “raw fish game” this section is for them!

Our meal started with a couple customer favorites from the small plates menu. Items like the spicy bombs (favorite), jerk chicken wings, shrimp quesadillas and crab fries were a delight. The crab fries stole the show. A heaping pile of smoking hot shoe string fries topped with REAL snow crab meat, green onions, spicy aioli and furikake (dry Japanese seasoning).

POKE PLEASE

Hawaiian Poke Co. offers nine poke varieties. Fish options like spicy cuts of salmon, cubed octopus, snow crab and ahi tuna can be found here. There’s a “poke add on’s” section of the menu. Here diners will find options like fried wonton chips, tempura crunchies and single servings of poke.

I easily ate my weight in poke.  Glistening ahi chunks and shiny salmon squares graced my table as I overindulged on four varieties of poke. Sadly, it all started to taste the same around bowl two, but my favorite was the spicy salmon poke. I really enjoyed the spicy aioli and the side of Inamona.

Inamona is a condiment or relish used in traditional Hawaiian cooking made from roasted kukui nut and salt.  The Inamona added a necessary layer of crunch.

Though, this was my first poke at Poke (get it?!) I truly enjoyed the experience. Houston offers tons of poke spots to try. I’m happy to have my own hidden gem near my home!
