Café Azur | Lunch with French Riviera Flare


Research studies state that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well, at Café Azur it’s lunch!

Houston provides a multitude of lunch options offering everything from BBQ to soups & salads. World renowned Chef Sidney Degaine’s lunch menu brings “French Rivera flare” to the Montrose area. His newly debuted lunch menu is sure to make you say “Oui Oui.”

THE FOOD

Café Azur opened 5 months ago on the corner of Montrose and Richmond. In the former dwellings of Max & Julie Brasserie . Even though they’ve only been open a short while, I’ve heard nothing but great things about their French brunch items. Specifically the Crêpe Suzette! So when I received an invitation to try a few items from their newly launched lunch menu.

Our first two starter salads were the  Salmon Gravlax and California Purslane. Did you know that Purslane was a common weed of the French Riviera? Purslane’s lemony bright flavor added a nice pop when paired with the quinoa and egg. If I had to select a favorite, I’d suggest the California Purslane! Though delicious, something about the combo of yogurt and gin, made it a close second.

Round two consists of two Tartines. The Salmon Tartine was the only one I tried, as the other was topped with swine.  The very basic definition of a Tartine is an “open faced sandwich.” Ours was topped with smoked salmon, ricotta cheese and cucumber served with a mix green salad. Tartine number two was topped with prosciutto, melted mozzarella and green onion.

The Beef Burgundy (also know as Beef bourguignon) is a well-known, traditional French recipe.  Beef Burgundy is a stew prepared with beef braised in red wine – Burgundy traditionally. At Café Azur the braised beef rests on a bed of mashed potatoes, fingerling potatoes, chips and gremolata. It’s one of the heartier lunch options on the menu.

THE SWEETS

During my lunch escape to the French Rivera, I realized how much I love French desserts. Crème brûlée has always been a favorite, but Café Azur has much more to offer. Their Pistachio Cake was yummy and looked like something from Alice in Wonderland.

 

“You scream, I scream, we all scream for Ice Cream!” Chef Degaine did the damn thing with his NO2 17 –Liquide Nitrogen ice cream display. I’d never see nitrogen ice cream before. The table-side presentation made us all quite giddy. Check out the full video below!

Café Azur is now open for LUNCH  Tuesday – Saturday 11:00am – 3:00pm.

DINNER  service Tuesday -Thursday: 5:00pm – 10:00pm, Friday — Saturday: 5:00pm – 11:00pm, Sunday: 5:00pm – 9:00pm

HAPPY HOUR Tuesday — Friday 5:00pm – 6:30pm

BRUNCH Sunday – 11:00am – 3:00pm
