A night of Cutty Sark Scotch Whisky cocktails at Mr. Peeples

crafted

Last night 4 dynamic mixologist from various bars around the city came out to Mr. Peeples for “Crafted”, an amazing night of stiff cocktails and stiff competition sponsored by Cutty Sark, Culturemap and 002Houston magazine.

Cutty Sark is an interesting whisky that when mixed with the wrong citrus reminds me of that honey-lemon theraflu, but when paired with the right citrus or flavor profile magic is made. Check out the tasting notes below to learn more its profile.

The “Cutty girls” were on site giving out tons of swag and “Sarky” shots. We even got to keep the glasses.

With the “oak-y” vanilla notes and fruity fresh finish of Cutty Sark Scotch Whisky at the forefront of the competition all in attendance were in for a treat. These masters of mixing served up their own unique cocktails with the one rule being “you must use the SARK!”

The Winning Cocktails “Bahama Queen” by Ryan Perry of Sundance Cinema. All 4 cocktails served were pretty tasty but the “Bahama Queen” created by Ryan Perry of Sundance Cinemas took home the $250 cash prize.

The Winning Cocktail consisted of:

  • Cutty Sark Scotch Whisky
  • Ginger and black pepper corn syrup
  • Amaro Averna Liqueur
  • Citrus (Lemon juice)
  • Chocolate bitters
  • Egg white for the “foam”

It was by far a great drink, but I tasted at least one other cocktail that was a strong contender.

“Maca PeQuena” by Kristine Nguyen of Lei Low Bar

Although she didn’t win the competition she is and will always be a winner in my book. I even made a sign to show my support! Her incorporation of Laird’s 12 year aged Apple Brandy, cinnamon syrup, cider jelly and salt tincture changed my entire palate and really brought out the true flavor of the Cutty Sark. It was also reminiscent of an “apple cider” and would be perfect served warm for the holidays!

The remaining cocktails were tasty but didn’t pack the same delicious, palate pleasing punch as the previously mentioned libations. Kudos to all of the mixologists that participated and congrats to Ryan and his Bahama Queen!
