Cooking Therapy with Chef Monica Pope

One of the many high points in a food bloggers life is meeting the chefs whose plates they’ve salivated over in magazines and editorials over the course of our careers. Texas-reared Chef Monica Pope, is a nationally known James Beard Award nominee whose passion for connecting her customers with local goods is clearly  reflected in her Sparrow Bar + Cookshop concept.

The Bar + Cookshop itself is pretty swanky with the over sized wooden table at the main entrance — great pre-mingle area. The bar has seats if you wish to pull up and chat and there are also 4 seater square tables on the first floor.

Google hosted its CityExperts to an intimate evening with Chef Monica  Pope ; where we cooked the night away with a fun — chef led,  cooking demonstration .  We sampled an array of customer faves form the appetizers menu and enjoyed a stacked cocktail menu with 12 choices of the most interesting concoctions I’ve seen.

The drinks were good, they are seasonal so they will change on ya. If there is something you like.. take note and when you return have the bartender make it for you! I have no idea what these drinks are because I didn’t take notes.. which Is how I know YOU SHOULD TAKE NOTES…lol

We sampled  the TRIO OF DIPS: red bell pepper puree, hummus, spicy black bean with grilled lavender-black pepper pizette, aleppo, “DATE WITH A PIG”: medjool date, chorizo, bacon, chermoula, “CHICKFRIES: Indian salt, red curry catsup. You must try the chick fires they were amazing and tasted just like french fries but healthier!

The second floor of the restaurant was setup for our cooking Therapy course with stations for each item. The vegetable and quinoa station, The roasted brussel sprouts station and the watermelon squash section.

I was on the vegetable quinoa station and spent the bulk of my time chopping vegetables and timing the quinoa. I have poor knife skills, so it was taken away and quinoa only take 7 minutes to cook. The remainder of my time was  spent goofing off!

The outcome was a beautiful masterpiece. We enjoyed steak and mac-n-cheese prepared from the kitchen and closed the evening  with more wine and a caramel dulce de leche curd.
